Job Description
In an agile R&D development environment, the incumbent designs mechanical systems as part of the development of new products related to the test and measurement market. The incumbent supervises and approves the work of designers under their supervision and ensures an exemplary level of quality in the concepts developed. The incumbent works in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in a state-of-the-art environment.
Job Duties
Specific Responsibilities
- System Requirements and Features:
- Contribute to the analysis, understanding and documentation of product requirements and functionalities in collaboration with the system architect and other disciplines;
- Develop and propose mechanical concepts;
- Characterize the mechanical performance requirements of the system (norms and standards, mechanical resistance, surface treatment, etc.);
- Characterize manufacturing, assembly and after-sales service requirements, in collaboration with operations;
- Characterize the physico-mechanical properties of materials and components (geometry, stiffness, mass, thermal and fluidic effects, etc.);
- Architecture :
- Contribute to the definition of the optimal product architecture in collaboration with the system architect and other disciplines;
- Make mechanical architecture choices based on available and mastered technologies;
- Product Design:
- Define and perform the mechanical design of complete systems;
- Manage the technical risks of development under their responsibility;
- Ensure that production cost objectives are met;
- Oversee mechanical product design reviews;
- Approve parts and assembly plans;
- Product verification and validation:
- Define the validation protocol for each of the mechanical components and subsystems;
- Ensure that the design meets system specifications;
- Ensure that an engineer who is a member of the OIQ ensures the Immediate Direction and Supervision (ISD) of the work on the project in accordance with the Professional Engineers Act. If the designer is a member of the OIQ, he or she can himself or herself provide the IT department on the project (Quebec only).
- Transfer to production:
- Contribute with the project manager to the planning of the work required for the transfer to production;
- Ensure the transfer to production in an efficient manner;
- Provide the mechanical specifications necessary for operations and technical writing;
- Ensure the updating of manufacturing documents in the PLM tool (Bill of Materials, drawings, 3D parts, etc.).
General Responsibilities
- Support less experienced mechanical designers working on the same project;
- Collaborate with the various stakeholders to resolve inter-departmental technical problems;
- Promote cross-site work and ensure an effective and open link with counterparts in other sites
- Support the introduction and optimize the use of new methods and tools according to the company's technology direction
- Be involved and actively participate in the development and implementation of the culture of continuous improvement.
Job Requirements
Technical skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of design experience, or equivalent;
- Member of the Order of Engineers, strongly desired (Quebec only);
- Good knowledge of mechanical positioning systems and robotics elements an asset;
- Possess mechanical notions to identify the multi-physics problems of products in development;
- Demonstrated experience in organizing and monitoring development work in projects;
- Proficiency in mechanical design tools (SolidWorks Suite);
- Have made a significant contribution to the development of commercially successful products;
- Knowledge of aspects of expertise in test and measurement applications;
- Intermediate English.
